Looking for a hike that’s off the radar but rich in reward? Þríhyrningur is a local favourite. It is short but steep, welcoming yet wild. You’ll follow ancient sheep trails rather than groomed paths, winding your way through untouched highlands with sweeping views over Þórsmörk, Fjallabak, and the South Coast (on a clear day). This is true wilderness walking, with the stories of the Icelandic Sagas echoing in the landscape. Þríhyrningur and the nearby Flosadalur valley aren’t just beautiful, they’re legendary.
Þríhyrningur and the nearby Flosadalur valley are key locations in Njáls Saga, one of Iceland’s most powerful sagas. This is where Flosi Þórðarson gathered his men before the burning of Bergþórshvoll, setting in motion one of the most dramatic episodes in Icelandic literary history. Hiking here isn’t just about the views—it’s about walking in the footsteps of saga heroes and outlaws, where every ridge and valley holds echoes of Iceland’s epic past.
Located 10 kms inland from Hvolsvöllur, Þríhyrningur is a striking mountain, with a presence all of its own. Þríhyrningur is located well away from the normal “tourist circuit” which allows the peaceful and intriguing nature of Iceland to be deeply encountered and completely savored.
